ASEAN is a booming economy and gradually plays an ever-increasing role in the world economy. Technology will be the key factor to fuel the development of ASEAN in the next phase. TALK 1: Developing STI ecosystems and social entrepreneurship to meet UN Sustainable Development Goals in ASEAN and beyond

Engineering and technology are indispensable means to an end, that is inclusive prosperity and sustainable development with 17 Goals that UN member states all signed up for. With its prominent vision to dedicate to the enhancement of economy and humanity, AAET could leverage its expertise and networks to cultivate STI ecosystems and social entrepreneurship in ASEAN including its Least Developed Countries members, and the World communities. Building on UN Technology Bank’s needs assessment findings and recent judge panel experience on MIT Solve tech-social entrepreneurship incubator, the speaker will share her insights and SoE examples i.e. how to identify unserved needs in underserved communities that could be met by human-centered STI solutions and develop into multinational opportunities; and how grassroots innovation could solve the “last-mile” development challenges and significantly improve people’s life quality at low cost. In this process, we should also discuss and consider the concept of scale-up, cross-sector collaborations, government regulations and support, and creating a mini-environment for circular economy opportunities.

TALK 2: ASEAN is the Next Frontier of the Global Intelligent Electric Vehicle Industry

We have observed tremendous growth in the global intelligent EV market in the past few years. In 2021, EV sales represented 9% of all passenger vehicle sales. The main drivers in this emerging market mainly come from the U.S. and China automotive OEMs, with the U.S.’s Tesla owning 21% of the battery-electric EV market and China’s SAIC owning 13%, and BYD owning 7%. Nonetheless, due to its recent rapid economic growth, ready supply chain, and current geopolitical situation, we believe ASEAN is poised to become the next frontier of the intelligent EV industry. To incubate this emerging industry, the ASEAN governments should invest in charging infrastructure and encourage entrepreneurship.
