UNESCO-IEEE Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Early-Career Engineers

Location: Luanda, Angola

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in collaboration with IEEE Entrepreneurship, plans to conduct a 5-day entrepreneurship workshop in Luanda, Angola, on 09 – 13 September 2024 for aspiring early-career engineering entrepreneurs.

Are you interested in commercializing your idea or invention and creating a business? Do you live in Africa? Would you like to learn how to become an entrepreneur?

This workshop is for aspiring early-career engineering entrepreneurs who are interested in learning entrepreneurial skills to commercialize their technology ideas that address market needs while also addressing the UN-Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs). The participants will benefit from the international perspective provided by the speakers in this workshop.

Application / Registration Deadline: 31 July 2024

We are looking for interested participants who will work in teams to develop their ideas and then pitch to judges via a ten-minute video they develop. The winning team will get a prize.

The workshop will be held in Luanda, Angola, starting on 09 September and ending on 13 September. The in-person event will be preceded by two virtual meet-ups in the weeks prior to the workshop to solicit ideas and form teams of approximately five people each.

Once in Luanda, Angola, participants will learn about topics including the UN-SDGs, taking an idea to market, creating a lean business model canvas, traditional and digital marketing, value proposition, finances, intellectual property, contracts and negotiation, leadership soft skills, and more. Guest speakers will include experts on local investment opportunities, local entrepreneurial success stories and more. Participants will also receive mentoring from a team of experienced inventors and entrepreneurs.

Eligibility Criteria

Participants must be:

  • Below 35 years of age by 31 December 2024.
  • Early-career engineers, including students registered in engineering programs and engineering practitioners.
  • A national and resident of an African country.
  • Available for all days of the bootcamp, including the two-pre-bootcamp online engagements.

Provisional Timeline

  • Application / registration deadline: 31 July 2024
  • Accepted participants notified: 06 August 2024
  • First virtual meet-up: pre-workshop online engagement 1 – Introduction and soliciting ideas: 27 August 2024
  • Second virtual meet-up: pre-workshop online engagement 2 – Team building exercise: 03 September 2024

For those living outside of Luanda, eligible participants will receive lodging accommodations in double rooms on a shared basis at the venue hotel in Luanda.

Participants will receive all meals except dinner.

Some travel might also be provided depending on individual need and circumstance.
