This special complimentary live, virtual event, in partnership with Microsoft, will be held on June 28, 2022, at 12 PM ET. During the event, moderated by Craig Bauhaus, Sr. Industry Executive in Manufacturing at Microsoft, a panel of subject matter experts will focus on Sustainable Manufacturing and Leveraging the 5 R’s: Record, Report, Reduce, Replace and Remove.

The manufacturing industry has the power to reduce environmental impacts in the midst of an urgent climate crisis. Many already have a roadmap of commitments and sustainability objectives: developing services and products with operational efficiency, optimizing the use of resources, and reducing waste. To track their sustainability goals and progress, organizations are continually evaluating their practices and technologies. The sustainability journey, however, requires collaboration. Most businesses do not operate alone and have dependencies on their partners and suppliers. The industry needs a common language, standards on how and what to measure for their sustainability KPIs, how to share secured and trusted data, building common data models and algorithms, and having agreed-to metrics for data recording and reporting.

This panel will explore innovative technologies enabling the 5 R’s for sustainable manufacturing, and identify solutions and strategies for companies as they move forward on their sustainability journey.

Event Moderator:

Craig Bauhaus is a Sr. Industry Executive in Manufacturing at Microsoft with 20+ years of experience in the introduction and application of advanced technology in Manufacturing and Automation. Many of these new technologies have been applied to solutions focused on Operational Excellence and Intelligence, Data acquisition and Integration, and Business Process Improvement programs.

He is working with customers who are at the beginning of their Digital Transformation in Manufacturing and those that have started the journey and are looking to the enabling technologies of Industry 4.0 to accelerate their strategic initiatives.

 

 

Panelists:

Dejan Milojicic is a distinguished technologist and director at Hewlett Packard Labs, Palo Alto, CA (1998-present). Previously, he worked in the OSF Research Institute, Cambridge, MA (1994-1998) and Institute “Mihajlo Pupin”, Belgrade, Serbia (1983-1991). He received his Ph.D. from the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany (1993), and his MSc/BSc from Belgrade University, Serbia (1986/1983). Dejan was a managing director of the Open Cirrus Cloud Computing testbed (2007-2011), with 16 global sites in the US, Asia, and Europe. Dejan has more than 200 papers, 2 books, and 71 patents. He is an IEEE Fellow (2010), ACM Distinguished Engineer (2008), and HKN and USENIX member. Dejan served on 8 Ph.D. thesis committees and taught Cloud Management at San Jose State University, mentored over 50 interns, and collaborated with many universities. Dejan founded a magazine and three conferences and served on several editorial boards and program committees. He received the IEEE Computer Society Richard Merwin Award.

 

 

Peggy Smedley is a Radio host, author, editorial director, and president of Specialty Publishing Media, Peggy provides a panorama of the disruption and digital rejuvenation that is required to achieve sustainability and circularity. Her role is to help guide transformative shifts in designing and building the right solutions from conception, and that means leveraging IoT and digital transformation for the innovation of products and ecosystems.

She offers content building, storytelling, and support, to help thousands of customers aggregate, process, and make key decisions about data so they can navigate the IoT and digital transformation journey. Therefore, her passion is to do whatever she can to adhere to her motto, “with great technology, comes great responsibility.”

Peggy has been fortunate to have clocked in more than 25 years of experience to be considered a futurist/specialist in IoT, AI, construction, sustainability, infrastructure, and digital transformation.

Coupled with a highly qualified and supportive team, she has a long history of covering manufacturing and construction, infrastructure, and an even stronger passion to empower a younger workforce and women to join STEM, IoT, and digital innovation.

Completing her latest book, “Sustainable in a Circular World,” affords her the greatest opportunity to help move the world from grey to green by shining light on future generations and inspiring innovation. She has had the honor of collaborating on eight books and authoring her first book “Mending Manufacturing” in 2014. As an award-winning journalist, one of the most laudable is the 2019 ASCE Excellence in Journalism Award.

Much of her success is a result of The Peggy Smedley Show surpassing more than 750 episodes, and it continues to be ranked the No. 1 IoT and digital transformation broadcast, airing every Tuesday at 12 pm central.

John P. Verboncoeur (Fellow, IEEE) received a B.S. (1986) from the University of Florida and an M.S. (1987) and Ph.D. (1992) in nuclear engineering from the University of California at Berkeley (UCB). He currently serves as Senior Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the College of Engineering at Michigan State University (MSU).

Following appointments as a postdoctoral researcher at UCB and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and as a Research Engineer at UCB, he joined the UCB Nuclear Engineering faculty in 2001, where he founded and chaired the Computational Engineering Science Program from 2001 to 2010.

In 2011, he was appointed Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at MSU. In 2015, he added an appointment as Professor of Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering, which he co-founded. His research interests are in theoretical and computational plasma physics and applications. He has authored/co-authored over 400 journal articles and conference papers, with over 5000 citations, and has taught 13 international workshops and mini-courses on plasma simulation. He became IEEE Fellow in 2013, received the IEEE NPSS Shea Distinguished Member Award in 2018, the IEEE Plasma Sciences and Applications Committee Award in 2019, and the IEEE Charles K Birdsall Award in 2022.

Prof. Verboncoeur is Past President of the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society, past IEEE Director, past Acting VP of IEEE Publications, Services, and Products Board, VP-elect of IEEE Technical Activities overseeing all 46 IEEE Societies and Councils, and about $500M in revenue, and serves on the Board of Directors for the American Center for Mobility national proving ground. He is Associate Editor of Physics of Plasmas and serves on the DOE Fusion Energy Sciences Advisory Committee. He has led a number of successful startups, including computerized fitness equipment, digital health systems, and distributed publication software used to produce consumer credit reports for a big-three credit bureau, with a role in the USPS mail forwarding system.
