Biography

Shaoshan Liu’s background is a unique combination of technology, public policy, public health, and entrepreneurship that enables him to take on global challenges and provide practical solutions to these global problems. 

Liu is CEO and Founder of PerceptIn, an intelligent robotics company that has commercially deployed autonomous micromobility services in the USA, Europe, Japan, China, etc. 

Shaoshan has published four textbooks and more than 100 research papers and holds more than 150 patents in robotics and autonomous systems.

His experience in public policy and public health includes his role as the founder of IEEE Special Technical Community on Autonomous Driving Technologies, an IEEE Senior Member, an IEEE Distinguished Speaker, a featured Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Member, and an ACM Distinguished Speaker, and a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health (United Kingdom). 

As a successful technological innovator for the past 15 years, Shaoshan Liu’s ultimate career goal is to improve human society through technological advancements. Shaoshan Liu’s research has advanced the technical community’s fundamental understanding of autonomous machines, including autonomous vehicles, drones, mobile robots, etc. The technologies that Liu developed have empowered the deployment of affordable micromobility services around the globe to serve the disadvantaged groups, such as the aging population and the disabled population in Japan. Leveraging on this success, Liu is currently collaborating with the United Nations to develop Autonomous Mobile Clinics to revolutionize the existing healthcare system to provide healthcare services in the Least Developed Countries (LDCs). Liu’s career journey sets a perfect example of improving human society through technological advancements. 

Liu’s research and business activities have received international recognition, exemplified by reports from leading media, including IEEE Spectrum, Forbes, Wired, L.A. Times, Nikkei (Japanese), Korean Broadcasting System (Korean), and China Daily (Chinese), etc. The impact of Liu’s contribution has reached beyond the technical community. He shared his technical development and business deployment experiences at international organizations, such as the World Economic Forum (WEF), the Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS), the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC), etc. Shaoshan is a member of the Advisory Council of Harvard Business Review, the Global Insights Panel of MIT Technology Review, the Insight Council of New England Journal of Medicine, and the Forbes Technology Council. He has also been a featured member of ACM and the Royal Society of Public Health. In addition, Liu serves as the autonomous machine area co-chair of the IEEE International Roadmap for Devices and Systems.

Liu holds an M.S. in Biomedical Engineering, a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from the University of California, Irvine, and a Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.) from Harvard University

Shaoshan Liu is the 2022-2024 China Region Team Lead on the 2024 IEEE Entrepreneurship Steering Committee.
